Questions Answered

1. What happens to the billions of people who ever lived who have never heard the Gospel?

Jesus talks about the end of the world in Matthew 24. In verse 14 He states; And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. He is telling us here that the end of the world will not come until the gospel has reached all people.

In our world today it is pretty safe to say that all have had a chance to hear the Gospel, but still there may be some who have not. This is also a reminder to us who believe to reach out to others with the life giving Word of God, both at home and in faraway lands. If we are unable to go and if we don’t have money to support missions, we can still do our part by remembering in prayer those who don’t know Christ. We can pray also, that God would open doors for missionaries. In Acts 13:47 the Apostle Paul reminds us; For this is what the Lord has commanded us: I have made you a light for the Gentiles that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

2. What about those that heard a false gospel and responded to that thinking it was the right one. An example would be the billions of people during the 1000 years when Catholicism was the only religion and people couldn’t even read the Bible themselves.

This is a difficult one and I am not sure how to answer you. I can say this though; the word of God has always been in existence, although like you say, there have been times when it was not so readily available. God tells us in Deuteronomy 30: 11-14 that His word is written in our hearts. He says; Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” NO, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

Although we are born sinners and enemies of God, we have a natural knowledge of God in our hearts. We know there is a God without being told. For those who truly search for the truth, it will be revealed to them in some way by the Holy Spirit. I think here of Martin Luther who reformed the church on October 31, 1517. He is the founder of the Lutheran Church.

He was studying to become a monk. He had many questions and doubts about what the Catholic Church taught. He was advised by the head of the monastery to search the Bible for answers to his questions. When he searched the scriptures, he found the truth. The church opposed his sharing the truth of God’s word with others which lead him to publicly oppose the church by nailing his 95 Theses (or concerns) on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany for all to see.

Today the Bible is readily available to all people, especially here in the U.S. It is very important that all of us search the scriptures so that we know what our own church teaches. We want to be sure it does not go against what God tells us in His word. If the teachings of your church contradict what God says in His word, you need to look for a church home that teaches the truth. Jesus Himself warns us in Matthew 7:15; Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. He then goes on to say; By their fruit you will recognize them. In other words we can tell by the way people live and act and speak whether they love God and follow His teachings.

3. What about people like my mother who is Schizophrenic and has a hard time distinguishing between what is real and what is a figment of her mind or her imagination?

As far as your Mom who is Schizophrenic is concerned - If she had faith and loved the Lord before she got sick she will go to heaven. God does not condemn people because of sickness and disease, whether it be physical or mental. If you are not sure if she ever had faith, then I would continue to tell her about Jesus whenever possible. The Holy Spirit can perform miracles and He has the power to put faith in her heart even though her mind is confused.

In the end there are some things we just have to leave in God’s hands and trust Him. We can’t begin to know His mind. He tells us what we need to know for our salvation, in His word. The Bible defines faith as being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1) There are things we in our human state are unable to understand, but we believe by faith.

For those in the past who have died without knowing Him, there is no way for us to know for sure if they are in heaven or not. Only God knows what is in each of our hearts. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future and that is what we are here to do. We need to make sure to the best of our ability that all people we meet have had that chance to know the Lord. If they choose to reject it, then it is out of our hands. We should however, continue to pray for them and never give up. There is power in prayer. God hears and answers us, but He doesn’t force anyone to believe in Him.

4. Can you show me the specific verses where it says Satan is a fallen angel who was once good and then decided to become evil?

God does not tell us at what point Satan fell from Grace. We first hear about him in Genesis chapter three where man’s fall into sin is recorded. We know that he was created perfect along with all of the angels because Genesis 1:31 tells us; God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. He created all things perfect.

In 2 Corinthians 11:14 the apostle Paul tells us For Satan masquerades as an angel of light. In John 8:44 Jesus rebukes the Jewish leaders for their unbelief and tells them You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire, He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. God also warns us in 1 Peter 5:8, Be self-controlled and alert, Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

5. We seem to have this idea that Satan is getting as many people as possible thrown into hell. What would be the reason for this?Just to spite God? I mean clearly Satan won the war. He got about 95% of humanity. I wouldn’t call it a victory for God unless God has something else up His sleeve that we don’t know about.

It is incorrect to say that Satan won the war. Jesus conquered death and the devil when He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. 1 Corinthians 15: 56 tells us The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. The devil lost the war and He wants to take whoever he can down with him. He has power on earth for now, but on judgment day he will be thrown into hell along with all unbelievers to suffer eternally. Although Satan is powerful, he is not as powerful as God. He is not Omniscient (having all knowledge), Omnipotent (All Powerful), and Omnipresent (present everywhere) like God. He cannot accomplish anything God does not allow him to. A good example of this is the story of Job. In Job 1:6-12 God reveals to us His conversation with Satan regarding Job.

6. Why do we think Satan is behind abortion or the killing of children? He is sending all these people to heaven! That is not very smart of him. I thought his job was to bring everyone to hell. Considering the odds, if he lets them live, they have a 95% chance of going to hell, whereas if he kills them in the womb or before a certain age, they have a 0% chance. Can you let me know your logic on that?

I will just say this; Satan is behind all evil in our world today including abortion. Satan does not have the power to send anyone to heaven. Only God does. As for babies both unborn and born, God does not tell us anywhere in scripture that babies, born or unborn automatically go to heaven. If your church believes babies are without sin, it is wrong because God tells us in Psalm 51:5; Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Babies are little sinners too and need God’s forgiveness. That is where baptism comes in. Baptism is a gift from God. It is not something we do for God, but something He does for us. Through baptism we receive faith from the Holy Spirit, forgiveness of our sins and we become a part of God’s family. The Holy Spirit puts faith in the hearts of little babies who are otherwise not able to understand or believe. It is then our duty as parents of that child to teach them about God through word and example as they grow. It is our responsibility to bring them up in the Lord.

I know many churches do not believe in baptizing infants, but I believe it is very important. God does command baptism when He tells us in the last chapter of Matthew verse 19; Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Children are included in all nations. He isn’t saying; “Go and baptize all adults and those old enough to understand. He is saying and including all people.

I have tried to address all of your concerns. I know you will still have questions. We all do. We fly by faith in our Almighty Creator God. He tells us everything we need to know for our salvation in His word. There is much that our human mind is unable to grasp, but when we arrive in heaven we will have perfect knowledge and all our questions will be answered. If you would like to discuss this further with me feel free to email me. I am glad to answer any questions I can. I am here to tell the story and happy to do so.

This hub has been written in response to questions asked by fellow hubber chenz2, after reading my hub “The Truth About Hell”.

Because I needed more space than the comment section provides, I made it into a hub. Hopefully it will answer the questions of others also. Always keep in mind that here on earth, during our time of grace; we will never have all the answers. God tells us all that we need to know for our salvation in His word. Beyond that we live by faith.

Hi Polly,I just want to say that you should not feel guilty about putting angels on your daughter's grave. If it comforts you to do this than you should. You know she is not there, but you still love her and remember her. Just because she is no longer here does not mean you should forget her. Blessings and Merry Christmas to you!

Beautiful hub and enlightening and I see no harm in baptizing children I guess that it one thing we will have to agree to disagree on. My granddaughter was not baptized and I know without a doubt she is in heaven, having not reached the age of accountability, only 6, but that would never be anything I would argue with anyone. Just curious and it just this minute entered my mind I promise but didn't John the Baptist baptize Jesus at about 30-33? Even that is much to think about, why was John baptizing people? How long had he been doing that? Jesus wasn't dead yet, there was no church yet, but I love all the questions a study brings up because it pulls you deeper and deeper in the word. There was one woman I thought to follow here and she thinks Christmas is a pagan holiday and when I asked about the three wise men who brought gifts to Jesus when he was born surely not being pagan but last I looked I had no answer and I know many people at Christmas never give Jesus one thought but for the ones who do what could possibly be wrong with celebrating the birth and death of our Lord? Both equally important.

Yes Polly, Jesus was baptized about the age of 30-33. I'm not sure why you asked "Why was John baptizing people"? Why not? Does your church have a belief about who can baptize? Just curious.

I would like to talk to you more about baptism, but I am at work and don't have time now. I will email you.

Thanks again for reading my hub. You are a bright spot in my day.

No it just occurred to me that John the Baptist is the first I remember hearing of baptism and I had not really thought of that before,I just wonder if it began with him, as I have heard him called a forerunner of Christ. It just surprises me thinking about it that it happened before the Church really started. Just muddling out loud in my mind, lol.

Kristeen Hub Author 17 months ago

Yes, John the Baptist was the first to baptize. I have been taught that Baptism replaced circumcision of the Old Testement. I am not sure of the thinking behind it. I would have to check with my pastors, but I will try to find out.

Jesus did not need to be baptized because He was sinless, but He wanted to be an example for all people. The water in Baptism symbolizes a cleansing. There is so much more to it than just water though. I feel a new hub coming... Blessings Polly.

Yeah, sometimes I rattle on so long I just decide to take it and make a hub, lol. Just all of a sudden I wanted to study the baptism with John though and understand it better. I do know what it represents but I don't understand the timing. My first thought was it is replacing a lamb sacrifice, but we know that can't be right since only shedding of blood can cover sin. Of course we know now the Jew lamb sacrifice was only leading up to Christ's shedding of blood, once for all.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. That was very kind of you to make a whole hub devoted to it. I love your heart :-) I will reply to what you wrote sometime soon... I probably agree with a lot, but some things I'm not so sure about. Besides that though, the only thing I would be careful of is taking everything your pastor says as the right interpretation. He is just as fallible in his interpretation as any. Pastor worship is an awful thing to get trapped in, because all it takes is one mistake by them to have your whole foundation come crashing down. In fact, when the Pope claims to be infallible in his interpretations, we criticize him. We need to have the same attitude with our pastors. His interpretation is only as good as the books he has read, the pastors HE had, and the culture he grew up in.

Plus, if you look back on church history, there is not one single MAJOR doctrine that all major branches have believed throughout church history, except for perhaps the divinity and physical resurrection of Christ. And of course, heaven being the reward.

chenz2,

I just want you to know that I do not worship my pastors. I worship God. I do however rely on them somewhat as they have had eight years of formal theological training and I have not. And that is not to mention their years of experience in the field. So far I have never heard them go against God's word. I belong to the WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) The WELS does not deviate from scripture in any way. Blessings to you and Merry Christmas!

chenz2 17 months ago

I didn't mean you actually WORSHIP your pastor in the way you worship God. I meant you believe them to be infallible and trust everything they say. By saying that WELS does not deviate from scripture in any way is to say that all other denominations DO deviate from scripture... because many other main denominations have opposite interpretations than Lutherans do. And that's where the problem lies. Your faith is in their interpretation of scripture. If they do not deviate from scripture, than the true gospel and way to live a Christian life was not around for 1600 years until after Christ. Did the Holy Spirit just take a 1600 year break until Martin Luther came along and finally gave someone the right interpretation?

Was Martin Luther right when he felt the Bible told him that "Women are created for no other purpose than to serve men and be their helpers. If women grow weary or even die while bearing children, that doesn’t harm anything. Let them bear children to death; they are created for that."

And if he was wrong about that opinion from scripture, how do you know that some other beliefs you have are not wrong now? If the Holy Spirit is okay with 1600 years of bad doctrine, why not 400 more years? Remember, he said the gospel would NEVER be conquered, so even during the Middle Ages when the Catholics ruled, they had to of still had the real gospel. And if they did, than they must now, since they teach the same MAIN things. If they didn't teach it, than no one was saved during the 1000 year period of the middle ages and only after 1500 were people able to be saved again by the true gospel.

Chenz2, You are putting words in my mouth. I did not say that all other denominations "DO" deviate from scriptures. I am not in fellowship with other denominations. I don't know exactly what others believe, but I know there are things I don't agree with. We are saved by faith. I don't see why it is so difficult to just take God at His word. It is more difficult to keep that faith when the church you are in fellowship with does deviate from Scriptures, even in small ways.

I like to know and understand what my church teaches. I realize that people interpret scriptures differently, but the basics of what God is saying is there for all to see. Often I see it twisted to mean something other than what God is saying in order to make it fit into a lifestyle that contradicts His teachings.

During Martin Luther's time women were looked at in a different light, but in all my church history I never heard of Martin Luther looking at women as objects created to serve men and bear children. I would like to know where I could find the reference to that if you wouldn't mind telling me.

As for the Catholic church, I don't agree with their teachings and I never have, but I have friends who are Catholic and I don't necessarily believe that they are going to hell because they don't believe the way I do. I know that they have faith. Where there is faith there is salvation. It's just that in all the praying of the rosary, and trying to be perfect (which no human can do)and going to mass everyday faith sometimes gets lost. We get so wrapped up in what we are doing for God, we forget that it is not what we do for God, but what he has done for us that leads us to heaven. The WELS is a no nonsense church body. We teach that we are saved by Grace alone through faith alone. We don't have to pray the rosary, and go to mass everyday. We don't have to "be perfect", which is impossible for any human. Our sins are forgiven through Jesus blood. Our debt to God is paid. Are we still sinners? Yes, we very definitely are, and we need to go to God daily with a repentant heart - we need to be sorry for our sins - we need to honor God with our bodies and our lives and glorify Him in our speech and actions. We need to love others as He loves us, but these are fruits or results of our faith. These things are not what get us to heaven.

In essence, my church believes the Bible as it is written. It takes God at His word. I stated to you before that we can't change what happened in the past, but we can look toward the future and the now and tell others about the Savior.

The Holy Spirit is not okay with "bad doctrine", but He is good with "faith" and who is to say that many of those people during Luther's time didn't have faith. Martin Luther found faith. He knew the church was wrong. He knew that there had to be a better way - an easier way. I'm sure others in his time did too. It is not for us to say that no one was saved during that 1000 year period. We don't know and shouldn't even try to guess, but leave it to God. The Catholic church was in the wrong, and if they still teach those same things today, they are still wrong, but that doesn't mean that all Catholics are going to hell.

The Pope is not infallible no matter what he or the Catholic church claims and I don't claim that my pastors are infallible either. They are sinners just like you and I, and they will be the first to admit it.

I don't know what more to say to you Chenz2. At some point we have to "let go and let God". He is the only one who is infallible. We can't know His mind. We just need to trust Him when it comes to things that are beyond our understanding.

I say, stop trying to guess and worry about who was saved 500 years ago and be thankful that the truth of the Gospel is readily available today. Go and tell! Make sure everyone you meet knows the love of God and the joy and freedom from sin we have in Jesus. We can't change the past and God is always in control. Don't try to second guess Him.

Merry Christmas in the Christ Child!

Kristeen,

Do you not see that EVERY denomination uses the same verses (Matthew 7:15; Watch out for false prophet...) against every other denomination? Every denomination thinks ITS interpretation is correct. This is one of the biggest things that outsiders use against Christians, and rightly so. We can't even come together on what the gospel means or how to live it out right :-( And EVERY denomination has scriptures to back its side up.

How do you know which denomination the Holy Spirit is speaking truth to? I mean, for much of his life, Martin Luther believed the soul was NOT immortal. Did the Holy Spirit lie to him for those years? Do you not see that everyone speaks different contradictory doctrines and yet claims to be led by the holy spirit in their doctrine? If you don't, go to christianforums.com and you'll soon realize how bad it is. And each side has many scriptures to prove their side.

So we have to be honest enough to admit that the holy spirit is not guiding people to the right interpretations of anything other than Jesus being Savior. You need to realize that. The Holy Spirit leads people to Christ, comforts people, and helps them live out the fruits of the spirit. That's it. He does not help someone interpret a passage properly. If he did, we wouldn't have 40 MAIN denominations out there... with thousands of branches off each one.

If you think the Holy Spirit guides you in interpreting scripture right, then please look at chapter 13 & 14 from revelation and tell me what all the symbols mean. I don't want you to look at what other people think it means. Remember, we are told the Holy Spirit will guide us into truth when we read the scripture. So reading what another man thinks Revelation means is not the Holy Spirit telling you. I want to know what the Holy Spirit tells YOU privately what the symbols mean.

Lastly, what do you make of your denominations belief that "as earnestly as we maintain that there is an election of grace, or a predestination to salvation, so decidedly do we teach, on the other hand, that there is no election of wrath, or predestination to damnation." How can he predestine people to heaven while at the same time not predestine the rest to eternal hell? It seems like they want it both ways. Both cannot be true and many denominations would disagree with them. So again, how do we know who is right?

I say all this not to confuse or undermine the authority of scripture but that we need to be honest and admit that just because men have interpreted scripture a certain way for many years does not make it true.

Kristeen profile image

Kristeen Hub Author 16 months ago

chenz2, I am not here to argue or disclaim what other denominations believe. I am here to proclaim the truth of God's word. I believe scripture as it is written and I am confident from what I have read and learned from scripture, that I am saved by grace alone through faith alone. The Holy Spirit does not speak to denominations, He speaks to people. He is God and is infallible. He will never misguide people.

I will not discuss Revelations with you. I am not a theologian. There is much there that I don't understand. I also will not discuss the doctrine of predestination with you.

When you say things like "The Holy Spirit is not guiding people to the right interpretations of anything other than Jesus being Savior" You ARE undermining scriptures.
